I am Nicolas Pierre Karmitz, an environmental engineer based in Zürich, with a focus on transport planning, spatial development and infrastructure management. My technical work involves GIS, modelling and impact analysis at the interface between human development and natural systems.
This website brings together my professional and academic projects, dance activities and other interests.
Education
ETH Zürich — M.Sc. Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems
My master's thesis involved developing a Python decision model to compare the long-term costs of combined road and rail corridors. Other projects covered urban development in Chur, public transport timetabling and operations, land-use modelling and ecological connectivity.
EPFL — B.Sc. Environmental Sciences and Engineering
Project work included a life-cycle assessment of building-integrated photovoltaics at Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, and modelling and GIS analysis of water movement and pollutant transport in soil.

Other experience and interests
I have taught snowboarding during the 2019 and 2020 winter seasons and bachata in spring 2025, working with different age groups and group sizes and taking part in team shows.
Between July 2025 and March 2026, I travelled by hitchhiking through Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, combining cultural exchange with language practice. I also worked in service at a Zürich restaurant from September 2024 to June 2025. Earlier experience includes work on the family farm, caring for horses and cows and working with agricultural machinery.
